Black is the New Black

As we approach Halloween it seems somehow appropriate to turn to winter accessories in dark shades. Black, let’s face it, has never really been off the fashion radar, but this season, it receives a new treatment as designers mix multiple textures and materials. Satin, leather, lace, suede, fur and velvet sit side by side in a splendid display of gothic chic. The result is surprisingly luminous and deeply modern. Some might even say bewitching.

The brands to watch

Unsurprisingly, given the eponymous late founder’s penchant for all things gothic, Alexander McQueen’s structured box, padlock and camera bags are best in black. Jimmy Choo’s timeless, elegant designs have always lent themselves to dark shades. This season’s offering is no exception. Elegant pumps sport tiny dots, oversize crystals or ankle chains for a new take on noir, whilst lace up suede heeled boots have a Russian feel. For lovers of flats, we recommend Burberry’s Hiles lace up pointed ballet pump.

A word from our buyer

Tell us a little bit about this season’s all black trend.

As we all know, wearing black is timeless and elegant. Wearing many different textures and materials in black is highly contemporary. The overall effect can also be extraordinarily luminous.

Which designers have been working with black this year?

We have seen this trend throughout the season with many different designers. For me the highlight shows were Alexander Wang and Proenza Schouler, who were both mixing multiple different materials, all in black.

Do you have a favourite product that really embodies the trend?

If I had to choose one accessory it would be the box bag from Alexander McQueen. It’s the perfect example of an everyday bag, elegant yet functional, that you can carry from day to night.

How do you recommend mixing black into your everyday looks?

Mix different materials, such as leather and satin for example. Just go for it and don’t forget to complete the look with all black accessories!

How to wear it

Take one trend – black - and mix it with another – velvet – for a gloriously gothic winter. Stand tall in the Jimmy Choo black velvet sock boot or hit the ground running in Pierre Hardy’s slider sneakers. For fans of flats, Nicholas Kirkwood’s Beya mules are the modern day Cinderella’s slipper of choice
