Very velvet

V is for very and V is for velvet. And ever the twain shall meet. So goes the saying (nearly…) and this season a truer word could not be spoken. From sneakers to heels, clutches to backpacks and jackets to dresses, velvet is this winter’s most ubiquitous texture. Hitherto reserved for nocturnal sorties, the big shift for 2017 is towards velvet as daywear.

The brands to watch

Edgardo Osorio of Aquazzura's is truly the master of the trend. His shoe collections continue to honour tradition and craftsmanship, whether the materials be the more classic suede and leather or the more daring and delicate brocade or velvet. His use of colour too is exemplary. Pale pink, aquamarine blue and forest green adorn mules and heels for the fanciest of feet. Sandra Choi, the creative director at Jimmy Choo, has always had a penchant for rich, jewel-toned velvets and this season is no exception. Booties, pumps and bags are dressed up for an opulent winter in bottle green, black, maroon and navy.

a word from our buyer

Tell us a little bit about this season’s velvet trend.

Velvet is an ongoing trend. This season it has really been elevated though and we are now seeing an all over, head to toe velvet look. The result is sumptuous, sophisticated and deeply feminine.

Which designers have been working with velvet this year?

Aquazzura, Tory Burch, Jimmy Choo, Malone Souliers, Tod’s, Pierre Hardy, Laurence Dacade, Karl Lagerfeld… The list is endless and each and every designer has interpreted the trend in a different way.

Do you have a favourite product that really embodies the trend?

If I had to single out one piece that embodies the velvet trend it would definitely be the Aquazzura velvet embroidered ankle boots. They are so pretty and so decadent!

How do you recommend mixing velvet into your everyday looks?

Velvet was classically reserved for special occasions and eveningwear only. Now we see velvet being worn in a more everyday way. So, for instance you can pair a pair of velvet platform sandals with jeans and a white t-shirt to really elevate your look.
